Gato Gordo Arts
Gato Gordo Arts is a Miami-based Miami-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to using the arts as a catalyst for education, connection, and empowerment. Born from the curatorial vision and community engagement of Gato Gordo Gallery, we create inclusive, culturally-rooted programs that celebrate diverse voices and invite meaningful dialogue.
Through exhibitions, workshops, artist residencies, and public art initiatives, we support artists at every stage of their careers—especially those from historically underrepresented communities—and bring transformative art experiences to people of all backgrounds. Our work spans visual art, photography, poetry, performance, and cross-cultural collaborations, reflecting the vibrant mosaic of Miami itself.
Expanding on this mission, Gato Gordo Arts also developed the Creative Care Program, which provides free art experiences and creative resources for individuals living with kidney disease and other chronic illnesses. This initiative explores the role of creative expression in supporting emotional well-being, dignity, and human connection.
By centering stories that deserve to be seen and heard, Gato Gordo Arts builds spaces where creativity thrives, barriers fall, and communities co-create a more just, connected, and expressive future.
Mission
Gato Gordo Arts Corporation exists to educate, inspire, and uplift Miami’s diverse communities through the transformative power of art. We use creativity as a tool for cultural expression, critical dialogue, and community empowerment amplifying voices that have historically been silenced and centering stories that deserve to be seen and heard.
Through exhibitions, educational programs, and the Creative Care Program, we expand access to meaningful artistic experiences for individuals of all backgrounds, including those living with chronic illness.
Creative Care Program
The Creative Care Program provides free art experiences and creative resources for individuals living with kidney disease and other chronic illnesses.
The Creative Care Program was developed by Dr. Inna Malostovker and Oscar Martinez, founders of Gato Gordo Arts. Drawing from Dr. Malostovker’s medical experience as a nephrologist and Martinez’s artistic and curatorial leadership, the program reflects a shared vision of art as a powerful tool for emotional restoration, human connection, and improved quality of life.
The program includes:
Free beginner-friendly art sessions hosted in the gallery
Creative Care Kits designed for patients receiving dialysis
Creative resources for pediatric patients
These initiatives provide moments of escape, emotional renewal, and human connection through artistic expression.
Why Creative Care Matters
Living with kidney disease and other chronic illnesses often involves constant medical routines and strict dietary and lifestyle restrictions. These limitations can lead to emotional fatigue, depression, anxiety, and a loss of identity beyond the role of patient.
Art offers something rare and essential: a space without restriction. There are no dietary limitations, no physical benchmarks, and no expectations. Creative expression provides freedom, emotional release, and the opportunity to reconnect with oneself beyond illness.
Scientific research supports the role of creative activity in improving emotional and physical well-being. Studies have shown that participation in art can reduce stress hormones, decrease symptoms of anxiety and depression, improve mood, and enhance overall quality of life in individuals living with chronic illness. Creative engagement has also been associated with improved coping, increased resilience, and a greater sense of agency.
Creative Care is grounded in both scientific evidence and lived experience. By providing access to artistic expression, Gato Gordo Arts helps restore moments of autonomy, dignity, and joy.
