BOJAGI & BEYOND
2025 Korea Bojagi Forum

March 6, – March 20, 2025

Bojagi, Korea’s centuries-old textile tradition, is a testament to the artistry, resourcefulness, and cultural continuity of its makers. Originally crafted as
functional wrapping cloths, Bojagi evolved into a deeply expressive art form, embodying themes of sustainability, ingenuity, and creative freedom. Today, Bojagi is not only a revered Korean tradition but also an evolving global practice, inspiring contemporary artists worldwide.

This exhibition, presented as a collateral event of the XI World Textile Art Biennial (WTA), brings together the works of 35 Bojagi artists, exploring the endless possibilities of stitched and layered textiles. From meticulously hand sewn patchwork compositions to intricate embroidered surfaces, each piece reflects the unique vision of its maker while honoring a shared heritage. The interplay of transparency, structure, and color in these textiles creates a dynamic visual experience, one that shifts with light and perspective.

As Bojagi continues to transcend its origins, it challenges the conventional boundaries between craft, design, and fine art. This exhibition highlights the dialogue between tradition and innovation, offering a contemporary interpretation of a practice deeply rooted in Korean culture. Through delicate stitches and bold compositions, the works on view celebrate both the meditative nature of textile-making and the rich narratives woven into each fabric.

By bringing Bojagi to a broader audience, we hope to inspire an appreciation for its beauty, technique, and cultural significance. This exhibition serves as a bridge—connecting past and present, tradition and experimentation, Korea and the world.
